Colgate University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan has announced the hiring of Jason Asbell to her staff as an assistant coach.
Asbell comes to Colgate after serving two seasons on the coaching staff at Bridgewater. He assumed the head coaching role in 2021-22 and helped lead the Eagles to 11 wins and seven conference victories en route to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinal appearance.
“I am extremely excited about the addition of Jason Asbell to our coaching staff,” Adeduntan said. “He is a people-first coach, who loves the game and has an incredible work-ethic.
“Along with our values and absolutes being well-aligned, we are both passionate about not only our own but our players’ growth and development. With his 16 years of experience working in collegiate coaching, Jason brings a breath of knowledge and a fresh perspective that I believe will be truly beneficial to our staff and team. I cannot wait for him to get started!”
As an assistant in 2020-21, Asbell helped the Eagles jump out to a 4-0 start before the rest of the shortened season was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. During his time in Bridgewater, Va., Asbell helped aid in the development of four All-Conference student-athletes.
“I am extremely excited and humbled to join the Colgate family and I look forward to working with the amazing scholar-athletes in this program,” Asbell said. “Coach G is a proven leader and winner, and I believe in her vision to lead our program to championship heights.”
Prior to his time at Bridgewater, Asbell was the head coach at Division II Davis & Elkins for 12 seasons. His teams produced back-to-back winning campaigns in 2013 and 2014 for the first time in 28 years. His 2016-17 team won 19 games, the most victories in 35 years and tied for second most in program history.
While at D&E, Asbell recruited and developed five 1,000-point scorers, including the program’s all-time leading scorer Stephanie Wooten with 1,800 points. He also recruited Jamiyah Johnson who tied the NCAA Division II record with 24 consecutive double-doubles during the 2019-20 season.
Prior to his tenure at Davis & Elkins, Asbell spent two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at West Liberty University. West Liberty posted a 24-6 record during the 2007-08 season and received a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Asbell began his coaching career in the Virginia high school ranks and took his first head coaching job in 1997 at Jamestown H.S. in Williamsburg as the girls’ head coach. He was named the 2005-06 state coach of the year after leading the Jamestown girls to a 29-2 record and the Group AA state championship.
Asbell received his Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies from Thomas Edison State University. He received his Master of Science in leadership with a concentration in sports leadership from Duquesne University.
