Courtney Chase Named WPI Women’s Basketball’s Full Time Assistant Coach

WPI Women’s Basketball coach Cherise Galasso recently announced the addition of Courtney Chase as the program’s full-time assistant coach. She replaces Brittney Kenney who was recently named Head Women’s Basketball Coach at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

“I am beyond excited to welcome Courtney Chase to WPI and to our Women’s Basketball Family,” noted Galasso. “We are extremely fortunate to add a person so strongly aligned with our team values and committed to enhancing our student-athletes growth both on and off the court.”

Chase comes to WPI from Hartwick where she served as an assistant under Head Coach Katie Marcella.  Hartwick finished 14-12, making an appearance in the Empire 8 tournament. Away from the court, Chase was a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee at Hartwick.

“I am truly honored and excited to join the WPI women’s basketball program and the WPI community,” stated Chase.  “I want to thank Dana Harmon, Coach Galasso, and the rest of the women’s basketball coaching staff for trusting in me with this responsibility. I can’t wait to start working with our exceptional student-athletes and continue to build on the success Coach Galasso has established in Worcester on the court, in the classroom, and in the Worcester community.”

The Long Valley, New Jersey native was a member of the William Smith women’s basketball team for four years and was selected to the Liberty League All-Academic Team in her final three seasons.

“Courtney has a tireless work ethic, is a person of high character, and has strong experiences as a coach, recruiter, mentor, and advocate,” added Galasso. “Her enthusiasm and desire to elevate our program is contagious. Our student-athletes are going to love her, and I have no doubt she will bring a championship mentality to everything she does.”

The media and society major, who began her career as a research associate at Julius Influencer Marketing, earned a master’s in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts in 2020 while serving as a graduate assistant in the Mark H McCormack department of sports management.   During her time at UMass, Chase was a graduate assistant in the sport management department and also a volunteer assistant coach at Mount Holyoke.

“I would also like to thank Katie Marcella (Union, formerly Hartwick), Jackie Ward (Mount Holyoke) and Lindsay Sharman (William Smith) for their collective guidance and support throughout my career,” concluded Chase.
