University of Hawai’i Women’s Basketball Adds Derrick Florence to Coaching Staff

The University of Hawai’i women’s basketball team and head coach Laura Beeman announced the addition of Derrick Florence to the coaching staff on Thursday.

Florence spent the last eight seasons as an assistant coach with Sacramento State under head coach Bunky Harkleroad.

Florence has 18 years of basketball coaching experience, previously serving as a club coach and an instructor at various elite camps in addition to his high school and collegiate experience. He was also a teacher and substitute teacher in the Compton Unified School District from 1997 through 2013.

He helped Cal State L.A. to a 21-11 overall record and a 14-8 mark in the Div. II California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2012-13. He assisted in practices, conditioning, and competition while creating statistical-driven scouting reports and helping develop the squad’s post players.

Head Coach Laura Beeman on Coach Derrick Florence:
I’m excited to welcome Derrick Florence to our ‘ohana. Derrick will bring another level of depth to our already experienced coaching staff. He’s a great teacher, and too often, this quality gets lost. Derrick will work with our post players, and what better time than now as we return and bring in height and depth to this position. He is a relationship person and will bring an intense yet even-keeled disposition to our players.
