Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced Tuesday that Stefanie Pemper will not return as head coach of the Navy women’s basketball program. A national search will begin immediately for the program’s next head coach.
“My gratitude to Stefanie for her efforts and the many contributions she has made to the Naval Academy over her 12-year tenure,” said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. “We have realized some historic moments that will be cherished for many years to come. On behalf of many within the women’s basketball community, our sincerest appreciation and very best wishes as she moves forward with new challenges.”
Pemper, who guided the Midshipmen to a 17-42 record and a 7-29 mark in the Patriot League over the last two years, closes out her career at Navy with a 214-164 record in 12 seasons in Annapolis. The winningest coach in program history, Pemper surpassed Dave Smalley on Nov. 30, 2017 with her 179th victory.
After back-to-back third place results in her first two seasons, 2008-09 and 2009-10, the Midshipmen won the first of three straight Patriot League Tournament Championships and automatic bids into the NCAA Championship starting with the 2010-11 season and going through the 2012-13 campaign. Additionally, Pemper and the Midshipmen earned spots in the WNIT postseason tournament in 2013-14, 2016-17 and 2017-18. During the 2016-17 season, Navy won the first national postseason game in team history with a victory over George Washington.
Pemper won a total of 113 Patriot League regular season games, as well as 17 Patriot League Tournament contests in her career. She was honored by her peers as the Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2014.
