Illinois State Director of Athletics Larry Lyons announced that women’s basketball head coach Kristen Gillespie has signed a two-year contract extension that runs through 2024.
“Kristen has made significant improvements in our women’s basketball program in a short period of time,” Lyons stated. “We look forward to competing for championships for years to come under her leadership.”
Gillespie is in her third season at the helm of the Redbird program and led the squad to a 19-12 record last season. The 19 wins a season ago were the most in the last six seasons for the ‘Birds and their 11-7 MVC record was their best since 2012-13. Under her guidance, Simone Goods and TeTe Maggett earned back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year honors and both were named All-MVC First-Team selections in 2019.
The Redbirds return to the court Saturday, Nov. 16, against in-state foe Illinois, with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. in Champaign.
