Newly-hired Wagner head women’s basketball coach Heather Jacobs has announced that Dario Hernandez, a New York City native who had previously worked on the staffs at Providence College and Saint Francis U, has been hired as an assistant coach for the Seahawks.
Hernandez, who began his collegiate coaching career in 2010 as a member of Jacobs’ staff at Adelphi, spent the last four seasons at Providence where his duties included directing the Big East program’s national and international recruiting efforts. With PC, he also played a major role in guard skill development, including video breakdowns as well as pre and postseason workouts.
“I am excited to welcome Dario to Wagner,” said Jacobs. “Dario was an instrumental part of our recruiting and rebuilding process while at Adelphi. He is a tireless recruiter and I am confident that he will help attract quality student-athletes who share our vision.”
At Providence, Hernandez also implemented, coordinated and directed the “Susan Robinson Fruchtl Elite Camp” which was instrumental in signing 75 percent of the Friars’ 2016 recruiting class. He also developed scouting reports and breakdown of upcoming Friar opponents, including pre-game and post-game reports, while serving as a liaison between PC’s women’s basketball program and the college’s admissions/compliance departments.
Prior to his four-year tenure at Providence, Hernandez spent one season as an assistant coach for the Saint Francis U Red Flash, a Northeast Conference (NEC) rival of the Seahawks. During his tenure with SFU, Hernandez was responsible for point guard development, and coordinated the program’s coaching clinic and team camp, in addition to assisting with the scout team and recruiting.
“I’m ecstatic to be rejoining Coach Jacobs and for having the opportunity to return home,” Hernandez said. “I was born and raised in Queens, went away for school. and then my career took me away.
“I believe college athletics is all about the people,” he added. “Heather Jacobs gave me my first opportunity in college coaching and I’m excited to rejoin her here at Wagner and help bring this program to where we all want it to go.”
In 2009, Hernandez received his bachelor’s degree in recreation from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC, where he also served as a student manager for the men’s basketball team. He also served as a coach and counselor at several basketball camps, including Coach K’s Duke Basketball Camp and Gary Williams’ Basketball Camp. In addition to his coaching experience, Hernandez played one season at both Schenectady County Community College and Southern Vermont College.
A native of Corona, NY, Hernandez worked at Big Apple Basketball in New York City where he served as a coach, administrative assistant and an academic coordinator, in addition to assisting with individual workouts and managing strength and conditioning workouts.
