Davenport Athletic Director Paul Lowden announced today the hiring of Robyn Scherr-Wells as the University’s third head women’s basketball coach.
“I am extremely excited to announce our new head women’s basketball coach Robyn Scherr-Wells.,” said Lowden. “Robyn has done an outstanding job with Roosevelt University and will have an immediate positive impact both on and off the court with our successful women’s basketball program.”
Scherr-Wells comes to Davenport after spending the last five seasons at Roosevelt University in Chicago in which she built the program from the ground up and complied an overall record of 85-73.
“I am thrilled to be joining Davenport University as its Head Women’s Basketball Coach,” said Scherr-Wells. “I would like to thank Paul Lowden and the search committee for this tremendous opportunity. Davenport Women’s Basketball is a program I have always admired in my six years competing in the NAIA and I look forward to continuing the winning tradition of competing for a conference and national championship on an annual basis.”
While at Roosevelt, the 2012-13 season marked the program’s arrival as a national competitor. Scherr-Wells guided the Lakers, in just their third season of existence, to CCAC regular season and tournament titles, marking the University’s first-ever conference crowns. The team earned a spot in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship, where the Lakers advanced to the Sweet 16. Scherr-Wells’ squad finished the year with a school-record 28 wins while ranking No. 10 in the final national poll.
Scherr-Wells ensured the Lakers were not a one-hit wonder, posting 21 wins, rising as high as No. 5 in the national rankings and making a return trip to the national tournament the following year. That season concluded a historic run for her inaugural recruiting class, a group featured two-time NAIA All-American and four-time All-CCAC honoree Casey Davis, who tallied 2,203 career points.
Scherr-Wells complied 85 wins in her team’s five seasons of competition, while her coaching acumen also garnered her many personal accolades. She was a two-time Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) NAIA Division II Coach of the Year (2013, 2014) during her tenure with the Lakers, while also being named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region IV Coach of the Year following the 2012-13 campaign.
Lowden added “It is a bittersweet moment with regards to the departure of Mike Williams to GVSU. We had a great working relationship and friendship. I wish Mike and his family all the best during this transition to coach the NCAA D2 Lakers. I know his new program will have sustained success we have enjoyed here at Davenport under his leadership.”
Scherr-Wells, married to Ryan Wells, is a 2001 graduate of the University of Michigan and earned her Masters of Business Administration from Roosevelt in 2014.
