Quinnipiac women’s basketball head coach Tricia Fabbri has announced the promotion of Mountain MacGillivray to associate head coach. MacGillivray, a 1996 graduate of Temple University, becomes the first associate head coach in Fabbri’s 21-year tenure at Quinnipiac as he now enters his seventh season on the Bobcats’ coaching staff in 2015-16.
“Quinnipiac is a really special place with an incredible investment in its student-athletes and I’m blessed to be a part of it,” MacGillivray said. “You can’t find a better place to work or better people to work with.”
MacGillivray’s role with the Bobcats has evolved through the years and one of his greatest responsibilities is within the recruiting of prospective student-athletes. His success in the recruiting landscape has only improved through the years as the last two incoming classes feature the three highest-ranked recruits (Aryn McClure, Sarah Shewan and Jennifer Fay) in program history. In his seven years with the Bobcats, MacGillivray has helped guide 15 All-Conference players, including seven in the last two seasons, as well as three Defensive Player of the Year award winners and two Tournament MVPs.
His extensive background within the sport has brought a wealth of new ideas into the Bobcats’ team and individual practices as he primarily works with the frontcourt players. In his time at Quinnipiac, five different frontcourt players have been named to an All-Conference team including two who earned multiple All-Conference accolades (Brittany McQuain and Courtney Kaminski) in their time as Bobcats. In addition, MacGillivray oversaw the development of the program’s all-time leading three-point shooter (Guastella) as well as the all-time assists leader (Gillian Abshire) and Quinnipiac’s Division I leader in blocks (Guastella), rebounds (McQuain) and steals (Felicia Barron).
MacGillivray also tackles in-season scouting throughout the season and has helped the Bobcats reach newfound heights with two 30+ win campaigns as well as a pair of conference championships in two of the last three seasons. Since his addition to the Quinnipiac coaching staff in 2009-10, the Bobcats have won the first two conference championships (2013 NEC, 2015 MAAC) in program history and have compiled a record of 129-63 (.672 win percentage) in his seven years with the team.
“One of my smartest decisions as a head coach was hiring Mountain seven years ago now,” Fabbri said. “There’s no questioning the six years he’s been at Quinnipiac have been the best years in the program’s history. Mountain is a devoted Bobcat who has shown relentless recruiting skills, tireless work ethic and persistence in the office that makes this program better every day. He is a tremendous confidant who is one of the hardest workers I have ever come across in my coaching and playing days. He has earned his title and is a living example of how hard work truly pays off. We couldn’t have reached the levels our program has grown to in the last few seasons without his commitment. I’m thrilled for him, his wife Grace and their amazing family on this tremendous achievement and I know he’ll be ready to go for the 2015-16 season as we look to defend our MAAC Championship.”
