GWU names assistant

George Washington head women’s basketball coach Jonathan Tsipis today announced that Diane Richardson has been named assistant coach at George Washington. Richardson is a Maryland native who brings with her a history of great success at the high school level.

Richardson has logged 20 years of coaching experience, including two years at the collegiate level. Richardson spent the 2006-07 season at American University, helping the Eagles reach the Patriot League title game, then was on the sidelines at the University of Maryland in 2007-08 when the Terps earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight.

Most of Richardson’s success on the coaching sidelines, however, came as head coach of Riverdale Baptist High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., where she has coached 12 All-Americans and 42 Division I student-athletes. In her eight years at the helm, both before and after her stints at the collegiate level, Richardson has guided the Crusaders to a 234-32 overall record and five national championships.

In 2012, the Crusaders were national champions of both the National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) and the National High School Invitational (NHSI) and earned a No. 6 ranking in the final POWERADE FAB 50 Girls’ Basketball national rankings, and Richardson was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) District High School Coach of the Year. In addition, she was chosen to coach in the WBCA All-America game in Denver in March.
