Mid-America Christian University has announced that women’s basketball head coach Roman Owen has stepped down from the position, the university announced this week.
Owen departs to take a position at the University of Oklahoma as the video coordinator on women’s basketball head coach Sherri Coale’s staff.
"The opportunity to be a head coach at Mid-America was a great way for me to learn," Owen said.
"I am thankful to all my players and coaches who put hard work in each day for us to be successful. Now with that being said, this is an exciting time for me to have the opportunity to join a program like the University of Oklahoma that is second to none. It will allow me to continue to learn and grow and I am very grateful to Coach Coale for the chance to be a part of her staff."
In his first season at the helm, Owen led the Lady Evangels to their most conference wins (8) since joining the Sooner Athletic Conference and their first NCCAA Central Regional title since 2007. He then coached the Lady Evangels to a fifth-place finish at the NCCAA National Tournament, losing only an overtime heartbreaker to eventual national champ Bethel College in the opening game of the tourney.
Overall, Owen coached six All-Sooner Athletic Conference selections, including the program’s first-ever NAIA All-American performer (Kourtni Williams, 2012-13).
Owen also coached the MACU men’s golf team the past three seasons and guided the Evangels to their lowest round in school history in his first tournament on the links, a 286 at the Southwestern Christian University Fall Collegiate Golf Tournament in 2010.
"The entire MACU family is sad to see Coach Owen leave," MACU Athletic Director Craig Ruiz said. "When you have someone as talented as Roman you know that he will be given the opportunity to grow in his profession. I know that Coach Coale and the OU program will benefit greatly from this addition and we only pray for his continued success!"
