I mentioned this in my blog yesterday as a rumor…it’s now official, Louisiana Tech assistant David Caputo has been named as the head women’s coach at Bloomfield College. Here’s the release:
Bloomfield College has named former Louisiana Tech assistant David Caputo as its new head women’s basketball coach, athletic director Sheila Wooten announced today.
Caputo returns to Bloomfield for the second time in his decorated coaching career, having served as an assistant for the men’s team under current head coach Gerald Holmes from 2002-2006. His first tenure at the institution saw Caputo help the Deacons to three consecutive CACC Tournament titles and two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances – including the first in program history during the 2004-2005 season.
The 33-year-old native of Bernardsville, New Jersey takes the reigns of the women’s program after a stellar two-year stint at Louisiana Tech, in which he helped guide the Lady Techsters to back-to-back Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament appearances and a berth in the Tournament Finals during the 2011-2012 season.
"I am extremely excited about David taking over our women’s basketball program here at Bloomfield," Wooten said. "His energy and the passion he brings to coaching and to the game of basketball are contagious. I could not be happier that he has decided to accept the position, and I am confident he will be extremely successful in moving our program forward."
Prior to arriving at Tech, Caputo served as head coach at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida, where he helped lead the program to three consecutive Southern Conference championships and three trips to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Region VIII Elite 8. Caputo recorded a mark of 54-26 during his tenure, setting a school record for wins in a three-year period en route to earning Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2009-2010.
Caputo’s previous coaching stops include stints as an assistant at NCAA Division I Florida Atlantic University during the 2007-2008 season and NJCAA institution Santa Fe Community College during the 2006-2007 campaign. A talented recruiter, Caputo has helped secure nationally ranked recruiting classes at each of his stops, including the eighth ranked class in the nation during his time at Santa Fe.
The former Division I assistant takes over a Bloomfield College program that has made the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament for 10 consecutive seasons, with each campaign ending without a postseason title. Caputo will look to take the Lady Deacons to the next level as a program, and capture the team’s first CACC title in the Division II Era en route to becoming a perennial power in the East Region.
"I am so excited to be back home and especially to be back at Bloomfield where I started my career over a decade ago on the men’s side," Caputo said of taking over the women’s program. "My passion, dedication and energy will be off the charts every day in every phase of the job to ensure that I lead this special group of young ladies to excellence athletically, academically and socially. I will push to instill a relentless work ethic in these young ladies as well, so that they will learn to love and embrace hard work."
