Coach Michael Madrid is fulfilling a lifelong ambition in becoming the women’s basketball coach at Paris Junior College. He comes to PJC after serving three years as assistant women’s basketball coach at Texas Woman’s University.

“I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to lead a program, to be able to work with these student-athletes and watch them grow,” Madrid said. “I think the best thing about being a coach is the leadership role and relationships formed along the way. I enjoy the challenge of helping student-athletes be successful. It’s an evolving process.”

At TWU, Madrid helped the Pioneers win their first Lone Star Conference tournament championship in any sport when they beat Central Oklahoma in 2011 to advance to the NCAA South Central Region tournament.

He began his coaching career at New Mexico’s Portales High School, helping the team win the 2001 Class 3A championship. After a year at Lubbock Estacado as freshman coach he coached for two years at Lubbock High.

Madrid spent five years at Lubbock Christian University under women’s head coach Steve Gomez, one as a graduate assistant and four as an assistant coach.

Madrid has a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s in sports administration from Eastern New Mexico University. He earned his master’s in education administration from Lubbock Christian University in 2007.
