Lyons named head coach at Washington Adventist

Washington Adventist University is proud to announce the hiring of Jered Lyons as Sports Information Director and Head Coach of Women’s Basketball. "Coach Lyons is prepared for this position, he will not only strengthen this particular program, but the entire department as a whole. We are thrilled as an athletic department to have acquired Coach Lyons" said, Director of Athletics Patrick E. Crarey II.

Jered Lyons begins his first season as head coach of the women’s basketball team and sports information director at Washington Adventist University. Lyons takes the helm of the Lady Shock after having spent the last year as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA, which competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) one of the oldest and prestigious Division III Conferences in the states. Under head coach Kirby Dean he helped the Royals to the semifinals in the 2014 conference tournament and to a 17-11 record. At EMU he also served as an Advisor for Multicultural & International Students and was the Assistant Fitness Center Coordinator.

Prior to EMU, Lyons was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Salisbury University under Josh Merkel, from 2011-2013. He served as recruiting coordinator, camp director for the Seagulls Day-camp, assistant director for the Nike overnight camp, and facilitated with daily operations of the program. During his final season with the Seagulls he helped the team reach a mark of 19-8. He also earned his master’s degree in post-secondary education at Salisbury University in 2013.

Before arriving at Salisbury University, Lyons taught ESL at N-Kids Academy in Icheon-si, South Korea in 2010-2011. He worked with students from elementary, middle, and high schools improve their conversational English. He also hosted after school activities coaching basketball and leading an advanced speaking class. During his time abroad he had the opportunity to visit and explore the cultures of Japan & Thailand.

Lyons began his coaching career in 2009 under legendary Tom Dickman at Hood College, the former Maryland State record holder with most wins by a public school. During his only season with the program he helped the team to a 15-11 mark and facilitated with recruiting the programs all-time leading scorer Cameron Cook.

He graduated from Eastern Mennonite University in 2008, with a B.A. in Communications. He was a member of the men’s basketball team from 2004-2008. During his senior year he served as team captain.

A native of Frederick, MD, Lyons played his high school career at St. John’s Prospect Hall under The Washington Post 2014 Coach of the Year Bruce Kelly, current head boy’s coach at Bullis Prep. He will reside in the suburbs of Maryland with his Fiancée Shari Yoder
