Evergreen State names head coach

The Evergreen Geoducks didn’t need to look far to find a permanent successor for retired head coach Monica Heuer as former assistant and interim head coach Jennifer Schooler has been named head women’s basketball coach.

Schooler took over the women’s basketball program in March as interim head coach, leading the Geoducks through offseason conditioning and practices. She served as an assistant coach for the Geoducks during the 2004-05 season before returning in 2011 as the top lieutenant to Heuer for the past three seasons.

A former head coach at the two-year level, she was head coach at Edmonds Community College from 2008 until 2011, earning NWAACC North Coach of the Year honors in 2009-10. She started her coaching career in 2003-04 as head girl’s basketball coach at Deer Park High School.

"First off, I’m honored to be part of the Evergreen family," said Schooler. "’I’m looking forward to the team’s growth and my growth. I’m committed to helping guide our student-athletes to be great both on and off the court."

This summer, Schooler traveled the country with Point Guard College, helping conduct camps in various cities around the United States.

"We had a tough choice but coach Schooler distinguished herself among a group of impressive finalists," said Matt Newman, Director of Recreation and Athletics. "After we saw how well she served as our interim head coach, I couldn’t be happier to have Jen leading our women’s basketball program in the permanent role. She’s got a big job ahead, following Monica Heuer and her 13 years at the helm, but she’s up to the task."

A 2002 graduate of University of Idaho, Schooler played basketball for the Vandals, ranking fifth on the all-time assists standings. Prior to her time at Idaho, she starred at Wenatchee Valley Community College, earning First-Team All-Conference honors. A 1998 graduate of Wenatchee High School, she was recently inducted into the WHS Panther Hall of Fame.

The Schooler Era will officially tip off on Nov. 1 when the Geoducks play host to future Cascade Conference opponent Walla Walla in a non-conference game at Costantino Recreation Center in Olympia
