Armstrong State University head women’s basketball coach Fala Bullock today announced the hiring of Brad Childers as the Pirates’ assistant coach for the upcoming 2015-16 season.
Childers joins Armstrong State from East Georgia State College, where he served as the head coach for the Bobcats. In three seasons at the helm of East Georgia State he helped the Bobcats improve from a 9-20 record in 2012-13 to a 15-14 mark in 2014-15 and led the team to a pair of NJCAA Region Tournament appearances. Nine of his players at the junior college moved on to play basketball at four-year schools during his three years.
He served as a volunteer assistant coach at East Georgia State for one year prior to taking over head coaching duties, and previously he served as a graduate assistant coach for the Winthrop University women’s basketball program in 2008-11, helping the Eagles to their first postseason appearance in school history in 2008-09.
The son of legendary women’s basketball coach Bud Childers, who amassed more than 500 head coaching victories at seven different institutions, Brad Childers earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Lenoir-Rhyne in 2007 and received his master’s degree in education in from Winthrop in 2010.
Childers begins his position at Armstrong in June. Armstrong State returns six players from last season’s squad that went 13-14 and advanced to the Peach Belt Conference tournament for a second straight season, including first-team All-Conference forward Brigitta Barta.
