Description:

Howard University Women’s Basketball is seeking a passionate  and driven Graduate Assistant (GA) to support the coaching staff in all facets of player  development and team operations. This position is ideal for aspiring coaches who are  looking to gain hands-on experience in a high-level Division I women’s basketball program.  The GA will contribute to both on-court development and off-court program management. 

This role is designed as a coaching-intensive position, with daily involvement in practice  planning, player instruction, film breakdown, scouting, and mentorship. Administrative  support will also be required to ensure the overall success of the program. 

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. 
  • Must be enrolled in and actively pursuing a graduate degree at Howard University. Must maintain full-time academic status and good academic standing throughout  the appointment. 
  • Evening and weekend travel is required. 

Coaching Responsibilities: 

  • Assist the Head Coach and Assistant Coaches in planning and executing daily  practices. 
  • Provide on-court instruction during team practices, skill development sessions, and  warmups. 
  • Contribute to game planning, including opponent scouting reports and film  analysis. 
  • Offer individual feedback and mentorship to student-athletes to support their  athletic and personal development. 
  • Support in creating player development plans for guards, forwards, or post players.
  • Participate in coaches’ meetings and contribute to strategic discussions. Attend all team functions, including games (home and away), practices, workouts,  and team meetings. 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee and mentor team managers and student support staff. 
  • Coordinate logistics for practices, games, and team travel. 
  • Assist with equipment management and game day setup. 
  • Support academic coordination by supervising study hall sessions. Assist with summer camp organization and operations. 
  • Provide support with recruiting logistics 
  • Attend branding and NIL-related meetings; help guide student-athletes on brand building basics. 
  • Help coordinate special events such as alumni engagement, senior day, and  program milestones. 
  • Plan and execute community service initiatives for the women’s basketball  program. 
  • Oversee planning and coordination of team meals for practices and games. Support travel logistics including itineraries, accommodations, and meals. Assist with key administrative tasks such as budget tracking and expense  reconciliation. 
  • Provide support in recruiting operations including visits, itineraries, and  communication. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Strong desire to pursue a career in collegiate or professional coaching. Previous playing, coaching, or team operations experience preferred. Demonstrated understanding of the game, player development, and coaching  techniques. 
  • Willingness to learn new skills and techniques 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office 
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) education or branding strategies  is a plus. If you have NIL/branding experience, please include this in your  application materials.
