Payne Finalizes Staff, Names Cammon Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Colorado

University of Colorado head women’s basketball coach JR Payne completed her staff for the 2016-17 season on Wednesday, naming Jeff Cammon an assistant coach.

Cammon arrives in Boulder after spending two seasons as an assistant at California.

“I’m excited to join JR and the rest of the Buff family,” said Cammon. “There’s a lot of potential at CU to build a special program. The idea and challenge of rebuilding a program is exciting and an opportunity I could not pass up. I’ve known this staff for a long time and have admired the way they’ve been able to turn programs around at each place they’ve been. Also, to be able to work with such great people that work hard, but truly enjoy it is great.”

While with Cal, Cammon was instrumental in leading the Bears to the 2014-15 Pac-12 Conference Championship game and also helped guide them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in that same season. During Cammon’s tenure in Berkeley, Cal posted a 40-27 record.

“I learned so much in the past two years working with a great staff and program at Cal,” Cammon added. “I’m excited to build on that and continue to learn and grow here at Colorado. It’s all about experiences and growing not only as a coach, but as a person as well. What better way to challenge yourself than to revive a program in one of the best conferences in the country.”

Prior to his time at Cal, Cammon served as an assistant coach at Long Beach State for five seasons. Cammon helped lead the program to five straight Big West Tournament appearances and in 2012-13, the 49ers were invited to play in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, marking the program’s first national postseason appearance in more than a decade.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Jeff joining our Buff family,’ said Payne. “He is as talented as they come and will be a tremendous asset to our program here at CU. Jeff is the type of coach who genuinely loves and cares for the student athletes that he recruits and coaches. On every level, he is a perfect fit for our basketball family.”

In addition, Cammon played a key role in helping Long Beach State reach new heights during the 49ers’ 2009-10 and 2011-12 campaigns. In 2009-10, LBSU finished fourth in Big West as the team advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. LBSU went 9-7 in league play, posting its first winning record in league play in four years. During the 2011-12 season, LBSU reached the Big West Championship finals for the first time in 11 years after the 49ers defeated second-seed Cal State Northridge and top-seed Cal Poly along the way.

Cammon spent two years as the head girls’ varsity basketball coach at Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills, Calif. before returning to the collegiate level. He also has served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Chaffey Community College and his alma mater, Alcorn State University.

A three-year starting point guard at Alcorn State, Cammon was named a team captain twice and played a pivotal role in leading the Braves to three conference championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance as a student-athlete.

Cammon graduated from Alcorn State in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and in 2005, he earned his master’s in physical education.
