Lafayette Staff Update

Lafayette women’s basketball head coach Theresa Grentz finalized her coaching staff for the 2015-16 season on Wednesday afternoon.

Grentz, who took over the helm of the Leopards program in April, has retained C.K. Calhoun and Ross James, and added former Temple University head coach Kristen Foley to complete her staff.

Foley, who most recently has been the Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman’s Administrator at Temple, joins C.K. Calhoun and Ross James as assistant coaches.

Calhoun and James are both entering their second year on College Hill. Grentz has promoted Calhoun to Associate Head Coach while James adds Recruiting Coordinator duties in addition to his assistant coaching position.

“I am extremely excited to have Kristen Foley join C.K. Calhoun, Ross James and myself on the staff,” Grentz said. “Each individual brings different attributes to the table from their coaching experience. Most importantly, all three assistant coaches are outstanding teachers of the game.”

Foley earned her bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Rutgers. A standout women’s basketball player under Grentz, she captained the Lady Knights to consecutive NCAA Elite Eight appearances in 1986 and 1987, while being named to the All-East Regional team in 1986. Foley was inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.

Following her playing career, Foley spent three years as Grentz’ assistant coach at Rutgers. She then became the head coach at Drexel from 1992 to 1995. In 1995, Foley served as the Temple head coach before transitioning to an administration role in 2000.

Among her many responsibilities as an administrator, Foley was the Tournament Manager for two NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional Championships (2011 and 2005) and the 2004 First and Second Rounds. Previously, she chaired the NCAA Fencing Committee (2004-06) and was a member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee from 2002-06. In 2005, Foley was honored with the “Outstanding Associate Director Award” presented by the All-American Football Foundation.

“Kristen is such an asset to this program because she brings not only coaching experience, but athletic administrative experience to the table as well. Kristen’s ability to guide individuals through strong relationships is uncanny,” Grentz added. “She has the unique ability to get people to do what she wants, and makes them believe it was their idea. Kristen’s characteristics blend perfectly with our ‘Hall of Fame’ staff. Kristen’s personality along with her high energy and positivity will help in creating a championship culture at Lafayette.”

Calhoun, entering her 10th year as a collegiate basketball coach including two years of head coaching experience at DIII Shenandoah (Va.), has transitioned into her new role on Grentz’ staff.

“C.K. Calhoun is in the ideal position as my associate head coach,” Grentz said. “C.K. has the foresight to think three steps ahead of whatever situation is coming next. She has suggestions, and more importantly, she presents solutions. I am looking forward to working with C.K. as she has the
ability to benefit our student-athletes on and off the court.”

Rounding out the staff is Ross James, who served as a graduate assistant coach at Texas Woman’s University from 2012-14 while completing his master’s degree in Kinesiology.

“Ross James is a tireless worker who enjoys his job. The ability to recognize and evaluate talent across the country is a necessary key to any highly successful staff and Ross is a trusted individual with these skills,” Grentz said. “He will do an excellent job assisting our staff in bringing top athletic and academic talent to Lafayette College.”
