Greene Picked to Lead Mustangs

Mount Ida College has hired Katie Greene to serve as both their new Head Women’s Basketball Coach and in the new position of Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Success.

Greene, who will also take up the title of Senior Woman Administrator, will be the ninth head coach in Mount Ida women’s basketball history. Off the court, she will be responsible for supervising the department’s Title IX compliance efforts, monitoring the academic success model for student-athletes, and overseeing the educational and life skills development of student-athletes, which will include an annual speaker series, captain’s leadership academy and first year and returning orientations, along with conduct violations and civic engagement for student-athletes.

“I want to thank Athletic Director Matthew Burke for giving me the opportunity to lead the Mount Ida College Women’s Basketball team and to work with the entire athletic department as an Assistant Athletic Director,” said Greene.

Greene is no stranger to women’s basketball in the Newton area, having spent six seasons as the head coach at neighboring Newbury College, where she turned a struggling program around and brought the Nighthawks to their first ever conference tournament playoff appearance in 2009 and their first postseason victory in 2012, when they reached the semifinals of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) tournament.

Greene also spent her first four years as the sports information director for Newbury and held the title of Assistant Athletic Director until she departed in May of 2013 to take the Director of Basketball Operations job at Division 1 Brown University.

“We are very excited to welcome Katie Greene as our new women’s basketball coach and as assistant athletic director,” said Burke. “Coach Greene has a proven track record of success as both a head coach and as an athletic administrator that fits perfectly into the mission and goals of our athletic department.”

For the last two years, she has been an assistant coach and Director of Basketball Operations for Brown, where she has coached three All-Ivy League Players and has been the program’s point person for everything from recruiting, scouting, coordinating team travel and logistics, camps, and community relations. The Mustangs will travel to Brown University on November 19th for their final tune-up before their home opener on November 21st against Bay Path.

Prior to her time at Newbury, Greene was an assistant at fellow Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Simmons College, where she helped the team to three straight playoff appearances.

She also played in the GNAC as an undergraduate at former conference member and local rival Pine Manor College, where she was the first 12-letter athlete in Gator history. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award in athletics in 2003 before graduating with a Bachelor’s of Arts in communications.

“I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about my opportunity to lead Mount Ida Women’s Basketball. I’m eager to lead this program to new heights and maintain a successful and enjoyable environment for all student-athletes,” said Greene, who will be looking to replicate her efforts at Newbury and help the Mustangs return to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

Greene, who currently resides in West Roxbury, Mass, will begin work next week.
