Gloria Bradley Named Beloit College Women’s Basketball Head Coach

After a national search, Beloit College has named Gloria Bradley as its head Women’s Basketball coach, Director of Athletics & Recreation Tim Schmiechen has announced.

Bradley, a successful coach at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels, arrives at Beloit after three seasons as the assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Chicago State University.

A 1984 graduate of Seton Hall University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education/Mathematics, she also has a Masters degree in Administration and Supervision from Montclair State University and is in the dissertation phase for her Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Wayne State University.

“I am honored to be named the head coach of the Beloit College Buccaneers’ women basketball program,” said Bradley.  “I would like to thank Tim Schmiechen, Christina Klawitter, and all that participated in the search committee for giving me this opportunity.  I am truly excited to be a part of the Buccaneers’ family and looking forward to building on a winning tradition.  With the season right around the corner, I am eager to hit the ground running and work with these special young ladies.”

Prior to Chicago State, Bradley spent 11 seasons as the head coach at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where she won 126 games and helped produce two All-Americans, 15 all-conference players, seven all-conference defensive team members and four 1,000-point scorers. In 2003, she guided Wayne State to the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance and received the school’s Outstanding Contributor Award in 2003. In 2010, Bradley received the Judy Sweet Award at the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy.

Before Wayne State, Bradley spent seven seasons at Montclair State University, six of them as the head coach. She guided the Red Hawks to Eastern College Athletic Conference championships in 1994, 1997 and 1999. Her 1995 squad won the school’s first New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Seton Hall for two seasons.

“We are very excited to have Gloria lead the Women’s Basketball program,” said Schmiechen.  “Her experience and passion for the sport make her a great asset for our department and Beloit College.”

Before her coaching career, Bradley was a standout basketball player at Seton Hall University. A four-year letterwinner and a 1984 First Team All-Big East Conference player, Bradley is the all-time leader in field goal percentage; is second in blocked shots; and third in rebounds.  She also still ranks in the top 15 in field goals, steals and scoring. She was named the New Jersey Player of the Year in 1984. Her play at Seton Hall lead her to be drafted by the Atlanta Comets of the Women’s American Basketball Association.

Beloit College is a residential, liberal arts college offering 40 majors to its 1,250-plus students.  It is located 90 miles northwest of Chicago and is one of the nation’s most international colleges, drawing students from more than 40 nations as well as every state.
